Abstract
Virtually everyone has heard of the Inca Empire, centered in Cuzco, Peru, and some are at least vaguely familiar with Bolivia and Peru's earlier Tiwanaku (Tiahuanaco) culture. Few, on the other hand, have heard of Tiwanaku's powerful contemporary, the Wari, centered in Ayacucho, Peru (circa a.d. 500-1300). This important volume is the only major and comprehensive work on these people of which I am aware, and was issued in connection with a Cleveland Museum of Art-organized traveling exhibition (the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, the Kimball Art Museum in Fort Worth) of Wari portable material culture. It should correct, to a significant degree, widespread ignorance of the Wari.Authors retain copyright to JSE articles and share the copyright with the JSE after publication.
